Because I can’t deal with this. And it’s not even that I download stuff that often. It’s the principle of the thing.
Companies are arguing that the entertainment industry is losing money due to pirating, right? But how do they know that? Have there been any actual studies done? Have they polled the people on the internet who would be able to answer best and give them the most conclusive data?
Of course they haven’t. If they had, they would find out that the reason they’re losing money is because everything is so fucking expensive and their biggest buyers are people who love television and movies and music but are not necessarily able to buy everything they want.
If they had, they would find that the reason people don’t upload things for profit. They do it so that others can discover something they love. And the people who download it either decide it isn’t worth their time or they go out and buy it because they love it so much.
This whole thing is just absolutely ridiculous. Movie industries are complaining about box ticket numbers? Well, maybe if you didn’t put every fucking movie in 3D and make us pay twelve dollars to see it you would get more profit. Higher ticket prices = less consumers. The same can be applied to television or music. Everything is so expensive. That is why companies are losing money (if they even are, I have not seen conclusive evidence of this) - not because of pirating. They are losing money because people can’t afford to buy their products.
So instead of thinking things through and realising that there is a simple way to increase their profit and audience (i.e. lowering prices so it is more accessible to their targeted audience), they have decided that the best course of action is to attack and make themselves completely unaccessible by alienating the people that buy their products.
To put it simply, the entertainment industry does not understand this one, basic principle: a consumer is not going to spend egregious amounts of money on a product they do not already know they will enjoy. If they know they will enjoy it, they will gladly pay for the expensive product. But unless I know I am going to love a television show, I am not going to pay sixty dollars for it.
- Other fandoms: *any complaints about their shows*
- Fringe fans:
Yep. Our fandom suffers more that yours
This is about to get me a hell of a lot of hate, but you know what? I don’t give a damn.
I am a part of a lot of fandoms. Fringe is one of them. In fact, I’ve been a part of the Fringe fandom for quite a while now. It is, for all intents and purposes, the fandom I have been actively involved with the longest these days.
But this is just stupid. It really is.
I feel like these days the Fringe fandom has been very…the word might be competitive, but I don’t think that’s particularly right. It’s like everyone is trying to prove that Fringe is better than everything else. I understand why you are doing that. I really do. Fringe doesn’t get awards, it doesn’t get much recognition, it is constantly in danger of being cancelled, and any other number of things.
This does not entitle you to tear down other fandoms.
Because this is what you are doing here. Maybe it was a joke, maybe not. But the fact of the matter is that this post isn’t saying I love the Fringe fandom, it is great, it is my favourite fandom ever. It is saying the Fringe fandom is better than your fandom because we lost a universe.
No. I’m sorry, but no. There are any other number of fandoms that have had to experience far worse things throughout the course of the show than maybe losing a universe. They have had to sit through far worse.
Why? Because the writers of those shows have put effort into making the audience feel the loss. They have wanted the audience to feel the death of a character or feel how separated characters are from each other. They force the audience to feel the way that the characters do.
Fringe isn’t doing that. I’m not saying that is a bad thing (after all, that universe isn’t necessarily gone yet), but it’s the truth. Fringe has not made a drastic, emotional effort to make the audience feel like Peter does right now. Their focus has been in introducing us to this new universe and emphasising the differences while trying to make us sympathise with this new universe.
Sorry if this offends you, but I am just really sick of seeing the Fringe fandom trying to one-up everyone because they’re scared. I get it. We don’t want to lose our show. But posting stuff like this? It will not help. The only way to save Fringe at this point is to get more viewers. Tumblr is the best place for that and by posting stuff that attacks other fandoms, no matter how snidely, is not the way to get people to watch. It will just distance them from the show.
Did anyone who has ever watched Supernatural wonder what’s so special about Sam and Dean?
There are other Hunters out there, but why were Sam and Dean the “chosen ones” so to speak.
None of the others ended up vessels, or had a special angel helper.
None of the others came back to life many times.
Just Sam and Dean.
I’m not complaining.
But anyone ever wonder, why?
Well, Sam and Dean aren’t really like the other hunters. Most of the hunters out there are probably like Bobby - they came into the job after they had already had normal lives. Sam and Dean grew up in the life. Even Chrissie (or is it Krissy?) seems to have come into hunting later than Sam or Dean because she remembers seeing her Mom killed.
But Sam and Dean don’t really know anything else. They were babies when John started hunting and they never had a normal life.
And some of it also comes from Azazel, I think. Because they were pretty normal hunters until they figured out that Sam was becoming psychic and it was linked to the demon that killed their mom.
Azazel made them different from other hunters because he singled them out. He said Mary was his favourite. He said Sam was his favourite. John found a psychic and was able to figure out it was more than just a fire unlike any of the other families of kids Azazel killed.
Plus, Azazel must have been in league with Lilith. We saw in Lucifer Rising that Lucifer told Azazel to find Lilith. So he must have been going around and making babies drink demon blood while trying to find Lilith down in hell. He must have been communicating with her somehow and been like, “hey, I’ll be opening a gate to hell you better get up as far as you can so you can make a break for it.”
There was so much planning involved with the pre-Apocalypse stuff that we never even really think about. But think about everything Azazel had to do. It makes you wonder if Azazel knew that Sam was more than just one of his “special kids.”
The point I’m trying to make is that none of the other hunters are singled out by the things they hunt. Sam and Dean have always been magnets because they are oddities amongst hunters and because of what was going to happen. It’s not really that the other hunters aren’t special, but that Sam and Dean are just anomalies.
Thanks to everyone who has followed me recently. Hope you’re ready to put up with some serious insanity and general fangirling.
Second, I just finished Paper Towns. Is it a law that everything written by John Green must make me cry at some point? Because I thought I’d be able to make it through the entire book without a tear being shed and then boom last page and the tears come. Is Katherines going to make me cry as well? I CAN’T HANDLE THE EMOTIONS.
But seriously, Paper Towns was magnificent. I can’t decide which one I loved more - it or Looking for Alaska. I really can’t. I might have to reread Looking for Alaska to decide (but only after I finish all my other books to read).
Third, I’m going to have to clean tomorrow. And give away books. I hate giving away books. I hate it.
Fourth, It’s really bad that it’s two in the morning because I want nothing more than to write but since I have to clean tomorrow I need to sleep.
Fifth, WHY IS JOHN GREEN SUCH AN AMAZING WRITER AND SIMULTANEOUSLY MAKES ME WANT TO DO NOTHING BUT WRITE AND THROW ALL MY NOTEBOOKS OUT A WINDOW AND GIVE UP BECAUSE I CAN NEVER BE THAT GOOD.
Precisely why I didn’t care for this episode. It was trying to be as amazing as the last finale, but it just couldn’t be. Sure, it had some neat things involved. But it just…
Okay, the writer is coming out. You know how in the Series 5 finale you get this amazing feeling of completeness even though you don’t know what’s going to happen next? You get that sense of closure, that feeling of everything is giong to be good now?
That’s called catharsis. That is precisely the kind of thing you want at the end of a finale (unless you want to be Lost or Fringe or Supernatural and give a horrible cliffhanger).
Series 6 is missing this. Because they tried too hard to get it.
